DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS- The work involves responsibility for the efficient operation and maintenance of water, wastewater treatment plants and well field within the Village. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Operator according to State and local health code in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees assigned to the water and/or wastewater plants. Rotating weekends. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES-
1. Attends to the operation of the water plant ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and effectively to provide an adequate supply of water.
2. Attends to the operation of the wastewater plant to ensure that equipment is functioning properly and effectively treating wastewater.
3. Makes daily inspections of equipment such sand filters, digesters, oxidation ditches and fine screen to ensure that equipment is functioning properly.
4. Performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
5. Records readings of meters and gauges and interoperates data accordingly.
6. Regulates and adjusts chemical feed pumps for water treatment.
7. Samples and performs required testing on water and wastewater to meet DEC and DOH requirements
8. Supervises and trains subordinates
9. Maintains log of plant operations, equipment PM’s and related records
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS-
Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant that uses a conventional style mixed media filtration system and an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. Working knowledge of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water and wastewater treatment; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to perform routine laboratory and field tests for proper control of plant operations; ability to read, record and interpret data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude, alertness and dependability required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• High School diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma. Satisfactory completion of appropriate level water treatment and wastewater treatment courses approved by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the NYS Department of Health and 1 year of experience in a water treatment facility and 1 year experience in an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility. Valid driver’s license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must include copies of the following with their application:
• Grade IIA or IIB Public Water System Operator Certificate issued by the NYSDOH
• Grade 2A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License issued by the NYSDEC
